Realm Qualifier Report for January 7th

realmq 12 300x225 Realm Qualifier Report for January 7th Game Grid in Utah

Utah Realm Qualifier

Last Saturday there was a Realm Qualifier in Kaysville at HajoMaje so we all made the excruciating trip there, being 15 minutes away and everything. We had a good turnout with 13 folks showing up, 9 of which are competitive regulars, and a couple others folks who came down to try their luck at the format.

It was a fairly competitive field with a handful of Day 2 National players including 2nd place Nationals finisher Drew Walden. As one might have expected, Grand Crusader made a strong showing with multiple iterations depending on who was playing it. We also had some unique decks turn up as well, including a token-based Deathwing deck and a couple Hunters. Our field had only a couple folks running the highly sought after Mazu’kon and Edwins but that didn’t decrease the potency of the decks.

Thrall made a showing in more than one version of the deck. Sava’gin made a few Rosalyns cry through out the day. Nick Delliskave went undefeated through 5 rounds of Swiss and as Drew put it “was winning all the die rolls”, including the ones involving the aforementioned Sava’gin. Joe Sumner was able to flex the might of the two most feared bombs in the format touting both Edwins and Mazu’kons in his deck. Tony O’Conner-Geiling opted to run the Goblin version of the list showing how much of a hurting Dagax can put on his opponents.

Andrew Stephens decided to sneak in with a token-heavy deck with Deathwing as a possible win condition with a few of his opponents having to deal with the Master Hero on turn 4 and 5. Citadels can only produce so many tokens a turn!

The final match in the top 4 came down to Tony and Nick facing off with their Crusader decks. Just when Nick appeared to have a victory in the bag, having beaten Tony earlier in the tournament, a double Dagax followed by a Delve before dropping a Faceless Sapper with a Grand Crusader on the board left Nick dumbfounded at the 20 point damage swing. That let Tony claim his extended-alternate Deathwing and both players snagging their 10 points to qualify for Realm Championships.
